Under the bonnet: the people, the money and the rules, plus why the publisher's own venue stays off the list.

Who keeps this notebook

MindShift Lab belongs to Northfield Park Associates LLC, 10705 Northfield Road, Northfield, OH 44067. Editors read contact@mindshiftlab.org.

Full disclosure first: Northfield Park Associates LLC, our publisher, operates a casino venue in Northfield, Ohio. It has no guest rooms, so it has no place in a hotel list and is left out. It is named here once, for candour, and left at that.

Who owns the ten hotels

Not the publisher. Only MGM Grand Detroit breaks that independence. It answers to MGM Resorts International, which is also our publisher's parent group, so its card is tagged “Sister property (same parent group)”, and its card states the connection plainly. Editors picked every position on the list, and the publisher keeps a commercial stake in the area the list covers.

Funding

Affiliate commission keeps the lights on. Hotel buttons may be tagged for referral; if you then reserve, a fee might come our way while your price stays put. The affiliate disclosure page lays the arrangement out.

Methodology and selection criteria

Candidates must be open, offer hotel rooms on the premises, and sit within reasonable driving range of the Ohio Valley, Detroit or the northern lakes. Survivors are then judged, in words rather than numbers, on four variables:

  • Rooms: comfort, outlook, and how honestly room styles are shown.
  • Restoration: spa, pools and on-site kitchens.
  • Setting: landscape or neighbourhood, and the journey from the closest airport.
  • Clarity: whether resort charges, card holds and age limits surface early.

Room totals, prices, founding years and awards stay out unless proven. No grades, no numeric marks. Gaming areas never shape the order and receive no description.

Experience and sources

Our writers cover leisure travel around the Great Lakes states. They lean on primary material: hotel websites, ownership announcements from tribal nations and companies, and state tourism offices. Thin evidence earns a “please ask the hotel” on the card.

Corrections policy

Found a stale fact? Mail contact@mindshiftlab.org naming the page and the line. An editor re-checks the hotel's own material, amends the wording if warranted and moves the revision stamp. Hotels are welcome to flag errors of fact; none can purchase a better position.
